Do you have a LOVE-HATE relationship with the weights?

I do. I love "feeling" strong and I hate being in pain afterwards.

Body Weight Workouts - Is the barbell your enemy?
As you may have heard I just turned 40-years old.

A lot of my friends and family are giving me black cards implying that turning 40 is similar to a funeral.

I take it all in good fun and I can roll with the punches, but in the back of my mind I do have to admit that sometimes I feel like the barbell is my enemy. It's a love-hate relationship. I have felt my best and strongest lifting heavy weights and I don't plan on ever giving it up completely.

However I've been lifting weights for over 25-years now and I'm starting to feel it in my back and joints at times. As a fitness pro what I'm about to tell you is a bit embarrassing.

Lately it has been getting harder and harder to get jacked up or motivated for my workouts. I’m only human and I know this is something we all go through from time to time.

This is why I have given myself permission to take a break from the heavy weights without losing any of my hard earned gains. In fact, when I go back to the weights I'll be stronger than before.

Personal Trainer - Hold Your Air?

As a personal trainer I typically teach my clients to take a deep breath in during the negative portion of the lift and tell them to exhale during the concentric part of the exercise.

When it comes to maximum effort work it's another ball game.

The rules that apply to high rep training are thrown out the window.

Fill your stomach with air before you unrack the bar and hold that air until the lift is completed. It may take practice but try to fill your belly with air rather than your chest. If you let you air out during a max lift attempt, your body will move making you unstable. Holding your air keeps your entire body tight and gives you a stable base to press from.

Some people actually prefer to take two airs. This means they take one breathe when they unrack the bar. Then while holding the bar at lockout they exhale and take another breathe before starting to descend. Give both techniques a try and see which you prefer.

Q: Why did you release the Critical Bench Program 2.0?
A: This is my way of celebrating the ten year anniversary of the Web site and the program and to thank everyone that has supported CriticalBench.com over the years.


Q: Why the need to update it?
A: Since I first wrote the program… I've interviewed hundreds of world class powerlifters and bodybuilders. I've started competing in power lifting myself and joined a few underground barbell clubs.

Q: How many people have used the Critical Bench Program since it was first released in the year 2000?

Q: Will everyone get the same results as you Mike? Gaining 50 lbs on their bench press in 10 weeks?
A: I don't know… you may get better results or you may get worse results… because we're different people.

Q: Why do I care about increasing my bench press anyhow?
A: when you have to lift more weight... your body reacts to the additional stress you're placing on it BY ADDING MORE MUSCLE TISSUE!
If you keep lifting the same amount of weight, over and over again, your body has NO REASON to get stronger OR gain muscle. It can already handle the weight you're used to.
But when you keep lifting more and more weight... your body must adapt, get stronger, and add muscle to keep handling that additional weight.
That's how muscle gains are made: It's by continuously trying to get stronger. When that happens, your body adds more muscle mass to handle this additional stress that's placed upon it.

Q: Is This Program Just For My Chest?
A: No, the bench press involves many muscle groups and you are given a full body workout to follow.

Q: Do I need special equipment like bands, chains and bench press shirts to do this program?
A: You don't need access to any special equipment.
All you need is a bench, barbell some weights and some dumbbells. Whether you're young or old, an athlete or weekend warrior, a novice or advanced lifter, you can use this program to set a new personal best training less than an hour a day four or five times a week.
I didn't want people to have to spend a lot of money or find a special place to train to use the program.

Q: Is this a powerlifting program or a bodybuilding program?
